Manganese tetraoxide has a distorted tetragonal spinel structure below a temperature of 1443K, and a cubic spinel structure above 1443K. It exists in nature in the form of black manganese ore and is the most stable oxide. It is insoluble in water but soluble in hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid. The product, when fully heated, does not absorb oxygen after cooling and is stable in air. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic spinel-type body-centered cubic lattice, with a=0.575nm, c=0.942nm, and the lattice unit is Mn4Mn8O16.
