Stable at room temperature and pressure. It is a brownish-red or brown crystalline powder that, when calcined, forms crystals. It has a spinel ionic structure of Mn2+(Mn3+)2O4, where Mn2+ and Mn3+ ions are distributed in two different lattice positions.
Toxicity
It can cause severe lesions in the central nervous system, and in severe cases, Parkinson's disease may occur. It can cause serious damage to the pallidum of the brain's striatum, and degenerative changes in the liver, kidneys, and myocardium. Chronic poisoning is divided into three stages: the initial stage involves damage to the central nervous system, sometimes accompanied by gastrointestinal changes and multiple neuritis; the second stage presents initial toxic encephalopathy; the later stage is characterized by Parkinson's syndrome, with symptoms such as a mask-like face, weakness, emotional flatness, and speech disorders. It can also damage the skin, leading to dermatitis and chronic eczema, making skin abrasions difficult to heal, and lymph nodes are generally swollen.
